What are the different chemical mixing methods?
While the methods of mixing vary from industry to industry, the scale of the project also influences this. With that said, here are a few of the most common types of mixing that takes place within industries:
Small research labs use this method and employ the use of Vortexers to do so. While the efficiency of the mixing might not be at its best, this method of mixing achieves a constant fluid velocity throughout. As the name suggests, this form of mixing involves higher speeds and is considerably more chaotic. It is precisely why the turbulent flow method achieves higher mixing efficiency. Consider this a mixing method that is the best of both worlds. Flow rates in bulk mixers are not fixed and can be adjusted. It allows for both turbulent flow and laminar flow, as and when needed. In this method, a magnetic stirrer plate achieves the mixing. Since the flow rates can be adjusted, finding an optimum mixing speed becomes necessary. Bulk mixers allow for mixing on both a large scale and a small scale.
How is it different from chemical blending?
The difference between chemical mixing and chemical blending lies in the final product. In the case of blending, chemicals involved combine for good, and the resulting product is an entirely new chemical. This new chemical need not have the same physical or chemical properties. It is, in effect, a new chemical on its own.
Another notable difference between the two processes is that chemical blending takes place between solids or between solids and liquids. Chemical blending does not use gaseous compounds. It is in contrast to mixing, where compounds used are liquids or liquids and gases.
